Certified Boiler Plant Operator - Federal Medical Center (Houston)

The role

Operate the central boiler plant that supplies steam and high-temperature hot water for heat, sterilization and other facility needs at a large federal medical center in Houston, around the clock.

What you will own

• Operate and monitor multiple-fuel water-tube or fire-tube boilers and their auxiliary equipment.
• Start, regulate and secure boilers; adjust combustion controls; shift between natural gas and fuel oil as required; hold proper steam pressure and temperature.
• Test boiler water samples, apply chemical treatment and document results to protect the equipment and keep the plant safe and efficient.
• Routine operational maintenance on valves, pumps, burners, feedwater and condensate systems and safety devices; minor repairs such as assisting with pump installation and rearranging steam lines and valves; troubleshoot electrical systems in gas and oil burners within the plant; coordinate larger repairs with the trades.
• Operate the graphic control computer and monitor utility plant alarms; respond to boiler and steam system alarms and take after-hours trouble calls for engineering systems when assigned.
• Keep the plant's records: daily operating logs (pressures, temperatures, fuel use, equipment status), water chemistry and treatment logs, safety device test records (safety valve and interlock checks) and trouble call and incident reports with actions taken.
• Read, interpret and apply the manuals, directives and regulations that govern the combined plant.

What we require

• Current, full and unrestricted boiler operator certification or license from a US state, territory or the District of Columbia.
• Experience operating a high-pressure steam or high-temperature hot water plant.
• Fluent spoken and written English, with documentation of competency, skills and licensure available on request.
• Able to meet the testing and immunization standards that apply to staff in a healthcare environment (TB screening, immunizations).
• Authorized to work in the United States (E-Verify) and able to pass a federal background check and facility access requirements.
• Completion of the facility's mandatory onboarding and safety training on start.

Hours and coverage

• Full-time, 2,080 hours per year, on site.
• The facility runs 24 hours a day. Shifts are 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, 3:30 pm to 12:00 am and 11:30 pm to 8:00 am, and evening and night shifts carry a differential.
• Federal holidays are observed by the facility, but you may be scheduled to work them.
• Continuity matters to this client: the assigned team is expected to stay in place through at least the first 90 days.
