Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) - Medical Center (Richmond, VA)

The role

Our client is a large medical center in Richmond, Virginia with an active cardiothoracic surgery program - bypass and valve cases in the OR, and balloon pump and ECMO support in the ICU. The program runs on a single dedicated perfusionist, and this is that seat: you are the pump for the service, roughly 90% of your time in direct patient care.

You will prepare and run the heart-lung machine, autotransfusion, intra-aortic balloon pump, and centrifugal ventricular assist device for scheduled cases, and stand ready for the emergent ones. This is a sole-coverage role with 24/7 call, so it suits a perfusionist who already lives with a pager and wants a program they can own end to end. The engagement is expected to begin at the end of September 2026 and runs a base year; the position is contingent on contract award.

This position requires U.S. citizenship. Credentialing, privileging, and a background investigation are completed before your first case.

What you will own

• Perfusion for the cardiothoracic service: coronary bypass and valve replacements of various types, operating the heart-lung machine and pumps, maintaining the sterile field and adequate blood volume, and preventing shock and air emboli
• Emergency readiness: supplies and circuit assembled to accept a patient onto extracorporeal circulation in cardiac arrest or failure, and ICU support for patients on balloon pump or ECMO
• Preparation, maintenance, and operation of the program's equipment: heart-lung machine, autotransfusion pump, intra-aortic balloon pump, and centrifugal VAD
• Pre-case review of the surgeon's plan in the electronic record, and a documented treatment plan within 24 hours of initiating treatment
• Transfusion records completed for every component given, scanned to the chart and copied to the blood bank
• QA/QI documentation for every procedure, complication, and outcome, plus the program's quality improvement and staff meetings

What we require

• Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (CCP), with continuing education current
• Graduation from an accredited school of perfusion technology
• At least two years of perfusion experience and a minimum of 200 clinical cases, with demonstrated experience in open-heart surgery, autotransfusion, heart-lung machine, membrane oxygenation, left and right heart bypass, intra-aortic balloon pumping, and centrifugal ventricular assist devices
• Current AHA BLS and AHA ACLS
• Any state licensure the role requires, full and unrestricted, and an NPI
• U.S. citizenship and fluent spoken and written English
• Ability to live within 30 minutes of the facility for on-call response
• Eligibility to pass credentialing, a background investigation, and exclusion-list screening, and disclosure of any malpractice history

Work environment

On-site in the OR and ICU of a large Richmond medical center. The program's equipment is facility-owned and maintained by you.

Hours and coverage

Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 2,080 hours per year, with overtime as cases require. On-call coverage is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including holidays, with a 30-minute response to the facility for emergent cases. The client holds continuity tightly: no key-personnel substitutions in the first 90 days except for illness, death, or termination.

Compliance and credentialing

Full credentialing and privileging precede your first case. Immunization and screening documentation (TB, MMR, varicella, Tdap, annual flu, hepatitis B series, hepatitis C titer) is required within five days of start, plus annual clinical, privacy, and safety training. Professional liability coverage is maintained for the engagement.
