The role

Hands-on support to the licensed trades on the facilities team at a large federal medical center in Houston: basic electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry and general building upkeep, working alongside journeyman tradespeople on a 24-hour hospital campus.

What you will own

  • Routine maintenance tasks in support of the licensed trades across electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry and general building upkeep.
  • Assist journeyman trades with preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs: staging materials, disassembling and reassembling components, and completing simple repairs under supervision.
  • Walk the buildings, spot obvious deficiencies and raise electronic work orders with clear descriptions of what you found.
  • Keep shops and work areas clean, orderly and safe; manage tools and materials as directed; complete housekeeping and safety checklists where required.
  • Use judgment on methods and procedures, including adapting conventional tools and techniques when aging components or modified circuits have changed operating conditions.
  • Document labor hours, materials and work performed on every work order, including the support you provided to higher-level trades.

What we require

  • Any license or certification your trade requires, current and unrestricted, from a US state, territory or the District of Columbia.
  • Practical building-maintenance skills and the ability to work safely from instructions in an occupied facility.
  • Fluent spoken and written English, with documentation of competency, skills and licensure available on request.
  • Able to meet the testing and immunization standards that apply to staff in a healthcare environment (TB screening, immunizations).
  • Authorized to work in the United States (E-Verify) and able to pass a federal background check and facility access requirements.
  • Completion of the facility's mandatory onboarding and safety training on start.

What will set you apart

  • Prior work as a maintenance worker or trade helper in a hospital, campus or other large facility.
  • Hands-on time with a computerized maintenance management system.
  • A trade apprenticeship in progress or an interest in progressing into a licensed trade.

Hours and coverage

  • Full-time, 2,080 hours per year, on site.
  • The facility runs 24 hours a day. Shifts are 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, 3:30 pm to 12:00 am and 11:30 pm to 8:00 am, and evening and night shifts carry a differential.
  • Federal holidays are observed by the facility, but you may be scheduled to work them.
  • Continuity matters to this client: the assigned team is expected to stay in place through at least the first 90 days.
